William Shields Swaggerty, Company B, 3rd Tennessee Cavalry, is believed to be the son of Surving Harvey "SH" and Lucy Ann Scott Swaggerty.

William S. Swaggerty enlisted as a private on 15 Nov 1862, in Company B, 3 Tn Cav. at London, Kentucky. His muster date was 27 Jan 1863.

He was imprisonment on 25 Sep 1864 at Sulphur Branch Trestle, Alabama. He was later exchanged. He mustered out on 10 Jun 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee.

He survived the 27 April 1865 expolsion of the "Sultana," steamer near Memphis, Tn.

William S. Swaggerty was the husband of Mary Ann Gregg. She filed for his pension 19 April 1878. She is also found in the 1890 Veterans Schedules of the U.S. Federal Census for Jefferson Co. Tn.

They were the parent of at least four proven children:
- Vashti
- Hamilton Love Swaggerty
- Harriett Bell
- Ira Kennedy Swaggerty
The 1870 U.S. Federal Census lists two more possible children, Charles A. and Mary M.

William Swaggerty is found in the following US Federal Census records:
- 1860 for Knox Co. Tn with his parents, 3 brothers and 4 sisters, occupation listed as laborer
- 1870 for Cocke Co. Tn with his spouse, Mary Ann, and three children, Charles A., Mary M. and Vasti, occupation listed as farmer

Survived the explosion and burning of the Mississippi steamboat Sultana on 27 April 1865, seven miles north of Memphis at 2:00 AM.
