Obituaries - Clair W. Wamsley

Asotin – Clair William Wamsley, 74, an educator for 22 years, died Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Tri-State Memorial Hospital. Death was caused by complications due to cancer.

Wamsley taught school and served as a school administrator in many towns in the region. Included in his career as an educator were jobs at Whitebird, Kooskia and Kamiah in Idaho. He also was employed by schools in the Washington communities of Johnson, Endicott, Orting, Derringer, Davenport, and Colville. He retired from an administrative position with the Colville School District in 1970.

He was born June 1, 1905 at Ilo, Idaho, in the Craigmont area, to William and Mamie Wamsley. He spent his early life in Montana. He lived at Asotin from 1948 to 1964. He married Wilma IK. Ausman at Asotin on May 28, 1937.

Wamsley came from a pioneer family of Asotin County. His grandfather was Harvey Wamsley, who homesteaded at Ten Mile.

He graduated from the former Northern Idaho College of Education, now Lewis-Clark State College, at Lewiston in 1935. He graduated from Pullman in 1942. He served with the Oregon National Guard for six years and with the Washington State Guard for three years.

He was an active member and past master of the Masonic Lodge and also had been a Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner. He was a member and past worthy patron of the Eastern Star. He was a past president of the Retired Teachers Association, and held memberships in the Lions Club, the Methodist Church, the Asotin County Historical Society, the Boy Scouts and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He was an avid rock hound and fisherman.

Survivors include his wife at the Asotin home; three daughters, Kathleen Wamsley of Seattle, Rachel Mattice of Nanimo, B.C. and Susan Wamsley of Salem, Ore.; a son, Ronald Wamsley of Tacoma, Wash.; two half-sisters, Doris Duke and Bernadine Erb, both of Eugene, Ore., and a stepsister, Mildred Guiley of Eugene.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Merchants Funeral Home with the Rev. Earl Lake of the Asotin United Methodist Church officiating. A graveside service will be conducted by members of the Masonic Lodge. Burial will be at the Asotin Cemetery.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Asotin United Methodist Church.
