Caroline Josephine Jillson was the daughter of Abner & Caroline Jillson. Her birth record shows Abner as a carpenter, born in Cumberland RI, and her mother born in New Brunswick, Canada.
In the 1855 Worcester, Massachusetts census, she is living with her mother, Caroline (age 30, head-of-household), Charlotte E (8), William E (6), Henrietta (4) and L[--] (age 2, he would be the son born in Worcester on 27 July 1853).
She was admitted to the Shirley Shaker community in 1856. In the 1860 census, Josephine is listed as age 9; she is at the Shirley Shaker community with Charlotte and Henrietta Jilson. There is no listing in the Shaker community for her mother, Caroline, or her two brothers. She appears in the 1860-1880 federal & state censuses as Josephine. Her sisters are in the 1865 Massachusetts census for the community but are not listed in the 1870 Federal census for it. Since both would have attained their majority, they probably had left.
From 1900 to 1920, she is listed as Caroline J Jilson/Jillson in the census for each community in which she lived, and in the various city directories that covered the town of Shirley. Of interest is that she was the informant on two Harvard death certificates in 1908 and her name is listed as Josephine C Jilson.
The Shirley community property was sold to the Commonwealth in October 1908; Josephine moved to the Harvard community in January 1909. On 29 July 1918, Josephine with 4 other sisters from the closing Harvard community moved to the Mount Lebanon, NY community.
Her death is registered in Pittsfield as Josephine C. Pittsfield has the closest hospital to the New Lebanon Shaker community.
