Walter Scott Parker was the son of Harry (Henry) Francis and Luthera Emerson Parker, the third of 8 children. Educated in Reading schools, he graduated from Dartmouth College in the class of 1868 and soon after took up teaching. He was connected with the Boston Public Schools for yearly 45 years, serving as assistant superintendent for many years.
During the Civil War he served with Company E of the Eighth Massachusetts Volunteers, thereafter known as the Richardson Light Guards of Wakefield. He was the first commander of GAR Post 194 and at the time of his death was commander and oldest living charter member.
For more than 46 years, Mr. Parker was a member of the School Committee of Reading and during those 46 years of service, he was often Chairman of the Board. He also served on the Library Board of Directors. He was President of the Reading National Bank and the State Representative from his district. The City of Reading mourned his passing so that many businesses closed the afternoon of his funeral and the schools were closed at noon. Walter Parker married Martha Isabella (Bette) Badger on June 8, 1870 and the couple celebrated 60 years of marriage, his wife dying only a few weeks before he did.
