Sophie Bonnstetter was born on October 1, 1925 in Rockford, Illinois to Frank and Artella Nanavski Norvellis. Following the death of her father, the family moved to San Leandro, CA, where Sophie grew up and completed her schooling. On December 23, 1944 she and Anton (Tony) Bonnstetter were married in San Leandro. Following their marriage Sophie remained in California until Tony's discharge in 1945. They then moved to Rockford, IL and worked at Roper Stove Company. In 1947 they moved to West Bend, IA and farmed until 1957 when they moved to a farm northwest of Slayton. In 1977 they moved to the Bonnstetter family farm north of Slayton. They retired in 1989 but remained on the farm until 1995 when they moved to Slayton. Tony passed away on October 21, 1998. Sophie remained in their home until 2009 when she moved to Lindenwood Assisted Living in Slayton. In January 2013 she became a resident of the Golden Living Center-Slayton. On February 28, 2014 Sophie entered the Murray County Medical Center in Slayton and passed away there on Thursday, March 6, 2014 with her family by her side at the age of 88.

She was a member of St. Ann's Church and was active with the W.C.C.W. Sophie loved being a mother, grandmother and housewife. Sophie enjoyed spending time with her family and taking trips to the casino.

Survivors include her five children and their spouses, Russ and Jean Bonnstetter, Jeff and Rhonda Bonnstetter, Donna and Keith Johnson, Barb and Paul Nepp and Tony Jr. and Sue Bonnstetter, one daughter-in-law, Julie Bonnstetter all of Slayton, MN, 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one sister, Barbara Lappe of Osage, IA.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Tony, son, Larry Bonnstetter, three sisters and three brothers.

Funeral Services

St. Ann's Church in Slayton, MN on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. James Seitz officiating. The pianist is Ruth Bonnstetter. The song leader is Janelle Timko. The pallbearers are her grandchildren. Interment is at St. Ann's Cemetery, Slayton, MN.
