BODY OF MAN, 75, FOUND AT DEWITT HOTEL WEEKS AFTER DEATH

Post-Standard, The (Syracuse, NY) - Friday, November 1, 1996

A 75-year-old man was found dead Thursday in the DeWitt hotel room he has shared with his wife for the past five years, Onondaga County sheriff's deputies said.

Lester Aldrich was found lying on the bathroom floor of his room at the DeWitt Inn, 3406 Erie Blvd. E., said Robert Burns, a sheriff's department spokesman. There was no evidence of foul play, Burns said.

Aldrich had apparently been dead for several weeks, deputies said. A patron who smelled an odor while passing the room alerted the motel's management about 2 p.m., Burns said.

Deputies said Aldrich 's body was covered with plastic and there was a strong odor in Room 45, where Aldrich has lived for the past five years with his wife, Elijean, 67, Burns said.

Elijean Aldrich wasn't in the room at the time her husband's body was discovered, Burns said. Sheriff Kevin Walsh said deputies are still trying to determine why Elijean Aldrich had not reported the death.

The medical examiner's office is expected to perform an autopsy today. Deputies contacted the Department of Social Services adult services division to assist Elijean Aldrich.
