He was born in Portland, Maine to Peter (from Indiana) and Mary (from Kansas) Cluskey. He married Mary McGlone (age 19) in Boston on January 18, 1874. US Civil War Records 1861-65 and US Army Register Enlistments indicate he enlisted in Army in Boston on Oct 2, 1881 at age 29 and discharged Oct 6, 1886. 1880 Census shows he and wife Mary living in Cambridge, Massachusetts with 3 children: Mary Frances (age 6), Daniel (age 4), Catherine (1 month).

Wife(Mary) passed away, and 1885 Colorado Census shows him in single status and living in LaPlata, Colorado. No record of where the children stayed, but seemed to remain in Massachusetts.

California voter register of 1866-1898 shows his residence in San Bernardino in 1888 and in Vallejo, California in 1894. Unable to find enlistment into US Navy service, but will continue to search.
