John Pember Brown was born in Sodus, New York son of Elijah Brown (of New York) and Jane Teal (of Canada). He later moved to Chicago. When the Civil War began he enlisted in Battery A of the Illinois light Artillery Volunteers. He fought in the battles of Fort Donelson and Vicksburg and was mustered out in 1863 with two broken legs and other injuries. He moved west to California, settling in Florin, California where he farmed and grew fruit on 30 acres. He married Catherine Gerhart in 1869; they were the parents of four children.
