America's First Families Ancestor Roll Of Honor WILLIAM PRINGLE (PRINDLE) CONNECTICUT (c1634-c1689) William PRINGLE (signed PRINDLE in his will) was a native of Scotland. We are not sure from where or even when he arrived in the American Colonies. It has been suggested that he came from Selkirkshire, in Scotland. Scottish Emigrants to the U.S.A. p. 360

It was the custom for a young man not living with his parents to make his home with a householder. Mr. Isaac ALLERTON, a Mayflower Pilgrim, arrived in New Haven, Connecticut in 1646. By 1653-54 we find William PRINGLE mentioned as "the Scotsman which lives at Mr. ALLERTON's". The Pringle Genealogy, compiled by Franklin C. Pringle, forward p. xii.

The progenitor of the PRINGLE/PRINDLE family signed the oath of fidelity to the New Haven Jurisdiction on April 4, 1654. Records of the Colony and Plantation of New Haven, from 1638 to 1649 p.140. On December 7, 1655, William PRINGLE and Mary DISBURROW (also spelled DESBOROUGH) were married by Mr. Stephen GOODYEARE.New Haven Vital Records, Vol. 1, p.3. They had a family of eleven children. Residents of New Haven could be fined if they did not have their chimneys cleaned twice a year, so William was approached by the townsfolk to sweep their chimneys. After some period of negotiations he agreed. This took place during the years 1653 through 1656. New Haven Town Records, p.266,269,270,291.

In 1672, William PRINGLE bought 24 acres of land in what is now West Haven, known as "West Farms",and settled there. This land now lies between Main and Elm Streets and Second and Third Avenues. Some of this property was still in the possession of the PRINDLE family in 1906. Prindle Genealogy p.227. The exact date of William PRINGLE's death is unknown. His will was dated October 17, 1689 and probated June 5, 1690. Although the place of his burial is also unknown, in all probability he is buried in the ancient ground of New Haven Green which was a place of burial from 1638 to 1812.Prindle Genealogy p. 229.

After the Revolution some Tory Prindles' went to Canada, and resumed their Scotch 'g' of their name, losing their identity as Connecticut Prindles'.Pringle Genealogy, forward x. Submitted by Estelle Pringle (A Tory Pringle)
