Carolyn Mitchell McCaughan, the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. William Wright Mitchell, died on February 14, 2014. She was the widow of the late Dr. John Joseph McCaughan, Jr. and was preceded in death by her daughter, Carla Kittle Gwin (Jan). She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Mitchell Kittle and Katie Kittle Powell (Rick). Nummy as she was called by her five grandchildren, Katie Gwin Jenkins (Mike), John McCaughan Gwin (Melissa), Richard Luther Powell, Jr., Carolyn McCaughan Powell, and Katherine Dabney Powell. Her great-grandchild, Katherine Campbell Jenkins, loves her Gigi. Carolyn was president of Les Passes, helping build the Cerebral Palsy Clinic. She was a supporter of the Arts and chaired the Third Memphis Symphony Ball. She will be remembered for always being beautifully dressed and was pleased, in the mid 1960's, to be named to the Commercial Appeal's Hall of Fashion. No mention of Carolyn is complete without mentioning her love of animals, her mastery of bridge, crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, and her ability to be a gracious hostess. Her parties were always lovely, exquisite, and thoughtfully prepared. A lifelong member of Calvary Episcopal Church, as she requested, a private graveside service was held at St. John's Cemetery, officiated by The Reverend Chris Girata. The family requests memorials be made to Palmer Home for Children, P.O. Box 746, Columbus, MS 39709-9983 or the charity of the donor's choice.
