Information on his adopted father In 1920, his father was living in Oskaloosa Ward 4, Mahaska, Iowa with parents and a sister (Ady E Mcfarlan 50 Sadie Mcfarlan 46 Laura J Mcfarlan 18 and Paul Ady Mcfarlan 13). His father was listed as single on his WWI Draft Card in 1918 and provided the name of Mrs. Sadie McFarlan. In 1930, Paul Ady is listed as married and a roomer in Oskaloosa, Mahaska, Iowa and worked as a baker. In 1940, his father is located in Oskaloosa, Mahaska, Iowa, single and counted at his mother's home working as a laborer on odd jobs. The last known residence of his father was in Des Moines, Iowa and he died, per SSDI, Apr 1969.

On 18 Jan 1946 he was discharged and then reenlisted at Jefferson Barracks, MO on 19 Jan 1946. He enlisted for the Hawaiian Department and was listed as single and no dependents. He also served with pride in the 82d Airborne Division and was a Master Jumper.
Married Marie Thomas Thayer in North Carolina after 1946.
Frederick and Marie made El Paso, TX their home after his retirement from the military. CSM McFarlan died at home in his sleep. He was the first CSM of 2d BN 59th ADA at Ft Bliss, TX in 1969 and moved the unit to Schwabach, Germany in 1970. He held many more positions during his long military career. He also belonged to the John T Bean Lodge #1333 AF&AM Masonic Lodge in El Paso, TX, which merged with El Paso #130.

CSM Frederick E. McFarlan, U. S. Army (Ret.), was one of the highest ranking enlisted men as he was promoted to the rank during the first ever CSM Promotion Board, to be conducted by the Army. He had also been selected to serve as the Command Sergeant Major of the Army, but turned the position down. A WWII Combat Paratrooper of the 505th PIR of the 82nd Airborne, he is credited with three combat parachute jumps which included jumps into Sicily and Normandy. CSM McFarlan also saw combat duty during the "Battle of the Bulge" in the Ardennes. A soft spoken and mild mannered gentleman in civilian life, as a CSM in the military he would not hesitate to "lock the heels" of an Army Officer who might be out of uniform. He will always be remembered as simply..."Fred" or "MAC", but his beautiful personality and friendly disposition, will be sorely missed, by all!
