While her husband was in hospital, intruders entered her home and assaulted her father-in-law and a hired worker. Her father-in-law was killed. After his murder trial, Alice and husband Joe separated. She moved to Chicago to look for work, leaving 6 of her sons with her mother-in-law.
On December 15, 1899 Alice was killed in an apartment fire. Newspapers covered the story and reported her recent arrival. It is thought she is buried in an unmarked grave. Family researchers are working to narrow the location.
