She was about age 8 years when her parents died. She went to live with Jonathan Leinbach through adulthood and marriage. Jonathan adopted her in 1903, she was then married to Charles Maderia. Carries's marriage record in 1899 gives her as Carrie Koch Leinbach. Jonathan's lengthy obituary mentions her as adopted.
