Richard D. "Red" Adam, 78, of Cumru Township, died May 21, 2013, in his home. He was the husband of Marion L. (Hainley) Adam. They were married July 8, 1991 Born in West Reading, he was a son of the late Carl D. and Mildred J. (Oswald) Adam. Mr. Adam was first employed 15 years in the Returned Goods Department by Glidden Paints, Reading, then by Carpenter Technology Corporation, Reading, for 19 years until his retirement in 2000. He was most recently employed by Rich Maiden Golf Course, Fleetwood.
Red was a 1952 graduate of Kutztown Area High School, where he played baseball and basketball. He was a member of the State Championship Basketball team, 1951-1952. After graduation he played minor league baseball as a pitcher for the Vidalia Indians, part of the Cleveland Indians farm system. In 2008 he was inducted into both the Kutztown Area High School Athletic Hall of Fame and the Lehigh Valley Golf Hall of Fame. An accomplished golfer, Red was a former member of Galen-Hall Golf Club, Wernersville and Hawk Valley Golf Club, Denver, Lancaster County. He won one Philadelphia Publinks championship and two Pennsylvania Publinks championships. In 1981, he also won the 4th annual Hawley Quier Memorial Golf Tournament, held at Moselem Springs Golf Club, Fleetwood. Mr. Adam also won numerous club championships at area golf clubs in Berks, Lehigh and Lancaster Counties. Survivors include his wife, a son,and a daughter. Other surviors include a brother. There are also three grandchildren. There will be no formal service. Inurnment will be private at the convenience of the family. Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., Kutztown, is in charge of arrangements.
