Elder Elijah Brown, a Baptist preacher, is believed to be the son of Samuel and Alice (Joslin) Brown of North Kingstown, RI. The records of that town were partially lost to fire, which means the exact date of Elijah's birth is unknown. Family records give his age so as to be born ca. 1754 but may be either earlier or later, especially as his supposed brother was born that same year, unless they were twins.

Elijah Brown married Hannah Townsend, daughter of Martin Townsend and Rhoda Ingham, about 1775, perhaps in Hancock or Lanesborough, MA. The latter is where an family old letter (in the possession of descendant Shirley E. Smith in 2013) asserts their son Nathan was born in 1778. Again, record loss in that town makes that difficult to prove.

Elijah and Hannah settled in Hancock, Berkshire Co., MA, near Hannah's father, Martin Townsend. Their children were Elijah T. Brown; Nathan Brown m. Willoughby Phillips; Clarissa Brown m. John Thurber; Hannah Brown (died young); and John Townsend Brown (died young).

After Hannah's death in 1784, Elijah Brown moved to Rensselaer County, NY, where he remarried to Elizabeth (said to be Jewitt) and had Stephen J. Brown; Elizabeth C. Brown m. Green Clark; Olivia H. Brown m. Caleb Gideon Clark; and Theodore Sedgwick Brown (died unmarried).

As for Elijah Brown's origins, the old family letter mentioned above (sent to an unnamed grandchild of Elijah's son Nathan) was written by someone who obviously knew him personally and was in some way related to the family. It states: "The first I ever knew of any of them was Sam Brown of R. I. He had 2 sons Charles and Elijah. Chas. was in the Rev. He never had any sons but one daughter and died in R. I. over 90 years of age."

This information led to the pension records of a Charles Brown, born in 1754 in North Kingstown, RI, who had an only daughter Alice by wife Welthian Briggs. This Charles Brown's pension records say that he lived in Petersburgh, NY, and in Stockton, NY. (Petersburgh was where Elijah lived and Stockton was where Elijah's son Nathan lived after his father died.) This Charles Brown eventually returned to Rhode Island, where he died at an advanced age.

A search of probate records in Rhode Island turned up the will of Samuel Brown of North Kingstown, which names both Charles and Elijah Brown as sons. Elijah Brown's probate records also show a claim against the estate by one Charles Brown. Hence, circumstantial evidence appears to support the old family letter.

Elder Elijah Brown is said to have been buried at his farm near Petersburgh, Rensselaer Co., NY.
