Mary Elizabeth, lovingly, known as Lizzie to her family. She was the daughter of former Mayor of Houston, John T. Browne, who served two terms in office from 1892 to 1896 and later continued his political career in the Texas Legislature, and wife Mary Jane Bergin. She was born the fourth of twelve children to her parents.

At the age of 20 she married Michael Cusack Lyons, in Houston on April 20, 1897. Michael had emigrated from Ireland and became a successful business man in the grocery business. Lizzie and Michael had eleven children, ten girls and one boy. After twenty-seven years of marriage, Lizzie was widowed by Michael's unexpected death. She continued to operate the family grocery business, Lyons Grocery, for an additional decade and raise their younger children through the Great Depression era. She was known to help customers struggling during this time in her grocery business; and provide for those who stopped at her home, with food or clothing, where an X had been placed on the sidewalk left by the hungry who had already received her kindness and offerings.

Lizzie lived to the age of 71 years.
