Rebecca Botsford Alling
Pioneer Rockford woman who died today at her home on N. Main St.
Death calls Mrs. Alling.
Pioneer resident expires at her home on N. Main St. Her age was 88 years.
Charter member of second Congregational Church.
One by one the early settlers Winnebago County are being called to their long home. Until now so few of the Pioneer group remain that they may almost be counted on the fingers of one hand. Death today made another inroad and the number, removing from earth Mrs. Rebecca Botsford Alling, who has been a resident of Rockford since 1837.
The death of Mrs. Alling was not unexpected. For nearly ten years she had been in poor health, and the last few months had steadily failed. A heavy electrical storm of last week affected her and since that time it was evident that the end was not far away.
During her long illness she had been faithfully cared for by her only living daughter, Mrs. Annabella Danky. The aged lady appreciated to the last all that was being done for her and only a day or two ago called Mrs. Danky to her bedside and expressed her gratitude for the many acts of kindness and devotion shown during her long illness.
Life of the pioneer
Rebecca Botsford was born in Derby, Connecticut, December 27, 1813, and lived in that city through her childhood. Later she moved to New Haven with her parents and was married there may 29, 1836, to D. D. Alling.
The young couple came west in the autumn of the following year, and Mr. Allen, at the advice of the late G.A. Sanford, located here. He was a carpenter by trade and built a number of dwellings in the little village, and was a contractor during his entire active life in Rockford. He constructed the old First Congregational Church on the west side of the river.
Mr. and Mrs. Allings married life which covered a period of over 66 years, was of the happiest, and it was said of them that they were sweethearts all their life. Mr. Alling died in 1898.
Mrs. Alling was a charter member of the Second Congregational Church. The high esteem in which she was held by the members is best expressed in the booklet issued at the time of the semi-centennial. This was the tribute paid; "Those who know Mrs. Alling best love her best. Although in feeble health she still retains the cheerful and happy disposition which was ever characterized by her Christian and Christ-like life.
Surviving Mrs. Alling are the daughter, Mrs. Danky, and one son, Frank S. Alling of Tacoma Washington. The only grandchild is Phil B. Danky, who is now employed on a newspaper in the Island of Hawaii.
