Carl J. Yow BELVIDERE - The Rev. Carl Jay Yow, 89, formerly of Belvidere, died Friday morning, Feb. 12, 2010, in Riverside Convalescence Center in Smithfield, Va. Born in Guilford County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Carl Hampton and Lena Osborne Yow. He served as a United Methodist minister for 31 years after beginning his ministry with Piney Woods Friends Meeting in Belvidere. He later served the King George (VA) Charge, Drummondtown Charge in Accomac, Va., North Garden (VA) Charge, Elkton (VA) Charge, Hickory UMC in Chesapeake, Ettrick UMC in Petersburg, Va., Sherbourne Ave. UMC in Richmond, Va., Weste End UMC in Roanoke, Va., Shiloh UMC in Montpelier, Va., Rocky Mount UMC in Virginia and Aldersgate UMC in Charlottesville, Va. He was a member of the United Methodist Conference of Virginia, graduated from Duke Divinity School, volunteered with the American Cancer Society, was a Ruritan and a life member of the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife, Merle Mae Briggs Yow; two daughters and their husbands, Rebecca Mae Crabill and the Rev. Ralph Crabill of Luray, Va., and Lena Merle Grant and Bill of Chesapeake; three sons and their wives, Robert Briggs Yow and Sue of Chinquapin, N.C., Carl Jay Yow Jr. and Darlene of Oak Ridge, N.C., and John Henry Yow and Connie of Carrollton, Va.; two brothers, the Rev. Howard B. Yow and Thomas B. Yow, both of Greensboro, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services in Hertford, N.C. Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Edenton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Susie Fitch-Slater officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Edenton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 37, Edenton, NC 27932. Online condolences may be sent to the family through www.swindellfuneralhome.com.
