Charles Wayne ‘Putt' Putnam, 93, Joplin, died Feb. 27, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, following a short illness.
Wayne was born Nov. 21, 1920 in Cleveland, OK and lived most of his life in Joplin. He served in Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) from April 1937 until September 1939 at Five Mile Camp BF-1 in Burns, OR. During WW II, he served in the U. S. Army Air Corp with the 449th Bomb Group, 719th Squadron in Grottaglie, Italy from November 1943 – May 1945. The 449th flew 254 combat missions over Europe and Eastern Asia and their squadron received two presidential citations and he was a recipient of the bronze star. He worked at Eagle Picher in Joplin for 43 years, working in the shipping department and retired in 1984 as shipping foreman. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Wayne was a charter member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Joplin and had served as chairman of the deacons, Sunday School Director, Training Union Director; chairman of the building committee and pastor search committee.
He loved serving his church family. Wayne married Merribell Rheme, who preceded him in death in 1994 and then married Virginia Bell Jeffers Paul on April 8, 1995 in Joplin and she survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Sharon Hoagland and husband, Forrest, Grove, OK and Linda Emmert and husband, Charles, Joplin; three stepchildren, Steve Paul, Springfield; Edward Paul and wife, Penny, Neosho and Molli Bee Augustus and husband, Galen, Burbank, CA; nine grandchildren, Tony Hoagland, Frank Hoagland, Randy Emmert, Bryan Emmert, Greg Paul, Clayton Paul, Jonathan Paul, Angela Augustus and Rebecca Augustus; six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He is preceded in death by a grandson, Jeff Paul.
