Lloyd Aasheim, 84, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on February 23, 2014. He was born the youngest of three, in Wolf Point, Montana on April 18, 1929, to Andrea and Lorents Aasheim.
At the age of 7, Lloyd's family moved to Ferndale where they lived until 1941 when they moved to Bellingham. Lloyd said they left Montana because of the lightning storms and on their first night in Ferndale there was a thunder and lightning storm!
Lloyd graduated from Bellingham High School in 1947, served in the Merchant Marines and lived for a brief time in Seattle before returning to Bellingham where he met and married his wife of 59 years, Patricia (Pat) in 1950.
Lloyd owned and operated a Chevron/Standard Oil full-service gas station for many years before becoming an accountant to gas stations and small businesses. He owned two accounting businesses during his lifetime, serving many types of businesses in Whatcom, Skagit, Island, San Juan, and Snohomish counties. He made many "life-long" friends through their business dealings.
For many years Lloyd served on the board of directors of the Lighthouse Mission, some of those years alongside his wife, Pat. They shared a love of people and a life of service. Lloyd also served his community in many capacities for Kiwanis, where he earned the George Hixson Fellow Award from Kiwanis International for his years of notable service. One of Lloyd's favorite fund raisers was the Kiwanis booth at Ski to Sea race's end where he could be found serving hot dogs and striking up conversations with old and new friends alike.
In his earlier years, Lloyd was an enthusiastic member of the barbershop quartet association, S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., where he nurtured his gift as a tenor.
During many of his middle adult years, Lloyd could be found on the volleyball court during every lunch hour, one evening a week and frequent Saturday tournaments. During those years he forged friendships that spanned the remainder of his life.
For over 40 years, Lloyd served as an elder for Bethel Lutheran Brethren in Bellingham; where his parents had been charter members. In the last two years of his life, until illness prevented him, he actively attended Christ the King Bellingham with his daughters and grandson.
Lloyd derived his greatest joy from his family and their weekly gatherings that spanned several decades. With his wife, Pat, they raised three children, and actively acted as a "father figure" to three of his six grandchildren. He has left vivid memories of extended-family vacations with his children and grandchildren who can each recall more than one of his many "stories" of Bellingham as it "used to be." Thanks to him, the history of Whatcom County lives on in our memories.

He is survived by his sisters, Lilly Flugekvam and Ruth Aasheim, of Bellingham; his daughters, Andrea Wallace and Brenda Aasheim, of Bellingham; his son, Steven (Donna) Aasheim, of Palm Desert; his grandchildren Jered (Shannon) Aasheim, Nathaniel Wallace, Justin Aasheim, Crystalline (Kevin) White, Aaron Wallace and Ian Aasheim; and five great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Lloyd's life will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at Christ the King Bellingham, 4173 Meridian St, Bellingham, with reception to follow.
