Born to James Lewis and Margarett Westbrook Armstrong of Chickasaw County, Mississippi, she married John M. Canipe, son of Lawson & Louisa Neal Canipe also of Chickasaw County, Mississippi. Sometime in the 1890's she and John migrated from Mississippi with some of John's siblings to the Barclay area of Falls County where they all settled for a time. After John's early death Mittie moved to Rosebud where she lived out her life.
She and John had five known children. They were:
