John was born June 9, 1937, in Greece City. He was the son of the late Merle George Ball and the late Helen Elizabeth Weiland Ball.
John retired from the U.S. Army National Guard as a sergeant first class following 31 years of service.
Following his retirement, he enjoyed remodeling houses and building birdhouses. He looked forward each month to his breakfast meetings with his retired Army friends. John was a member of St. Alphonsus Parish, having attended St. Louis Catholic Church.
John is survived by three daughters, Karen Ball of Butler, Rhonda (Jeff) Rumbaugh of Chicora and Tricia (Philip) Lebanno of York, S.C.; one son, David Ball of Chicora; seven grandchildren, Kenneth David "D.J.," Mackenzie and Cassidy Maples, Isabella, Philip-Anthony and Marissa Lebanno, and Michael Ball; one great-grandson, Skyler Lee Maples; five sisters, Phyllis (Don) Everly of Greece City, Merril (Butts) Hilderbrand of Butler, Joyce Connor of Greece City, Linda (Jim) Slater of Greece City and Melanie (Dale) Owens of Hooker; one brother, Joel (Kathy) Ball of Greece City; and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Judy "Lovey" Ball, who passed away Jan. 25, 2013; and two brothers, Robert and Louis.
BALL - Friends of John A. Ball, who died Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, will be received at the William F. Young Funeral Home, 132 Main St., West Sunbury, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Louis Catholic Church with the Rev. James Bedillion of St. Alphonsus Parish officiating.
Military honors will be at the church by the American Legion Post 778 and VFW Post 249 in Butler. Private burial will be in the Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004.
