This family uses SLATTEN and SLATTON interchangeably.

Daughter of James and Nancy Murrell of Hawkins/Hancocck co TN. She was with husband John Slatten (mar 1835) in 1850 Lee co VA, then appears in 1860 Owen co KY with seven of her youngest children. A son Joshua disappears after 1850 census, 1900 census records her as 10 children, 7 living. Her father was a neighbor to John Slatten, father of her husband, in Hawkins/Hancock co TN, along the Big War Creek.

John Slatten died May 6 1858, acc to Matilda's pension app.

Each son joined the Union Army as they reached enlistment age. Her pension app was rejected on the technicality that son Thomas J Slatten was not treated explicitly for tuberculosis or kidney disease while in the service, although all medical affiants state his health was permanently undermined while in the service. The fact that Matilda was provably the mother of six sons who served in the Union Army, all but one of whom were deceased by the time the government acted on her application, seems to have made no difference. When she was 85 and blind, her nephew Clinton D Murrell appealed to Senator W J Deboe (R-KY) in 1901. There appears to have been no help provided to her.

Milward Funeral Home arranged to transfer her body from Eastin Ave (probably present-day Eastin Road) in Lexington KY to Sadieville KY in 1903. She is probably buried at Emison Mill with five of her sons, because Sadieville Cem was not established until 1913, but the neglected state of Emison Mill Cemetery disallows physical proof. Records of burials there are avidly sought.
