Twin Falls Weekly News December 14, 1911 Thursday A few days previouse, McKinlay had left Twin Falls for Portland with a car of hogs which he was shipping to market under his supervision, more hogs belonging to Al Page were put onto the train bound for the spring market. When the train reached the upgrade near La Grande, a second or helper engine was coupled to the caboose at the rear, in which McKinlay had retired for the night. The boiler of this locomotive evidently could not stand the strain, and, with out warning to the men in the car ahead, exploded instantly killing McKinlay.

The funeral of the late A.D. McKinlay was held at Dreamland Pavilion Tuesday afternoon at 2 0'clock under the direction Auspice of the Elks' Lodge, The Eagles and Odd Fellows' Lodges attending in a body.
A very touching tribute was paid by C.D. Thomas in the eulogy delivered for the B.P.O.E, which was as follows:
Alexander D. McKinlay was born February 23, 1852, at Turkey River, Iowa, and died near La Grande Oregon, December 14, 1911.
He came to Idaho in 1878, and first settled in Grangeville, in Idaho County, where he was engaged in farming and stock-raising. From there he moved to Wallace, Shoshone county, Idaho in 1885. In 1905 he moved to Twin Falls. He was always very active in politics.
He was a father and mother to his four children, his wife having died when they were infants.
He also leaves a wife, an excellent splendid woman, who, although she has been with us a short time we have learned to respect.
