Andrew was the son of Thomas Atkinson (1713 - 1783) and Letitia (Knox) Atkinson.

Andrew was a lieutenant in the 33rd regiment, British Army.

Andrew married Jane (Murray) Atkinson (1765 - 20 Oct 1836) on 4 July 1780 in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was born in London, England, to Sir Archibald and Lady Mary Murray, of Black Barony, Scotland. At the time of their marriage, Jane's first name is given as 'Jean'.

Andrew and his wife came to the United States the about 1785.

Andrew was reinterred in Congressional Cemetery from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 29 Sept 1911.

The children of Andrew and Jane were:

1) Archibald Atkinson (1784 - 8 Aug 1813) was born in Ireland. He was killed in East Florida, while defending the rights of his adopted country against invaders.

2) Eliza R. Atkinson (1790 - 30 July 1831) is #110027799. However, the person who made her memorial will not link her to her parents if proof is not provided that she is their daughter. Despite sharing a gravemarker with her mother and it stating Eliza is her daughter.

“Atkinson. On Saturday morning last at her residence in Georgetown, Eliza R. Atkinson.”

3) Letitia (Atkinson) Humphreys (16 July 1786 - 24 Jan 1859) married Samuel Humphreys, son of Joshua.

4) John Atkinson (died 1822).

5) Mary Letitia (Atkinson) Yonge married Philip Yonge.

6) George Atkinson (died 2 Feb 1826) died unmarried.

7) Jane (Atkinson) Gant (1800 - 1872) was born in Georgia. She married Dr. Gant. They had a daughter, Georgiana Gant (born c.1825). Georgiana was born in New York. In the 1850 U.S. Census, Jane and her daughter were living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1870 U.S. Census, they were living in Washington, DC. Georgiana was living in Washington, DC, in the 1910 U.S. Census.
