Mr. RECORDS was the third child of a family of nine children born to James Madison and {Elvira} (DOBBINS) RECORDS, namely: Sarah, Byron, Walter, Almeda, Butler, and two unnamed infants.
His father, James Madison, {Jr.}, the son of James Madison and Sarah (WILSON) RECORDS, were pioneer citizens of Boone County, Kentucky, and were among the early settlers of Greene County, Indiana, coming here in the spring of 1840. They settled on a farm and were extensive tobacco growers, and James Madison, Sr., operated the first tobacco shop in Greene County. Besides working at the tobacco business they were also extensive fruit growers, having an orchard of 1,000 apple trees and 2,000 peach trees.
After the death of the parents, William Morton (Mort) came into possession of the farm and continued in the fruit business and tilling of his farm as long as his health would permit. After his health had failed and he was no longer able to carry on his farm work he was reluctant in giving up. He was never married and he and his faithful dog, "Ted," lived alone until sometime in November when he came to spend the winger with his brother, Butler RECORDS, and wife. Among his last words were "Be Good to Ted."
Mr. RECORDS was in industrious, successful farmer and fruit grower and had accumulated a comfortable home for himself in his declining years. He had spent his entire life on the farm where he was born and his neighbors and friends who were accustomed to seeing him almost daily, will miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his brothers and sisters except the brother at whose home he died.
He was honest in his dealings with his neighbors, and always greeted them with a cheerful smile.
