D.C. returned to Cheektowaga in 1862 and married Mary Winspear on June 7, 1863. (Copies of several letters found at an estate sale that he wrote to her and others during this time are stored at the Cheektowaga Historical Museum)

"DIED. BENNET-At Cheektowaga, N.Y., Oct. 8, 1897, David Chapin Bennet, aged 74 years, 9 months. Funeral from his late home at 3:30 P.M. Monday, Oct. 11."
-Amherst Bee 14 Oct 1897 death notice: "Cheektowaga Chat. Cheektowaga. October 13, 1897. Mr. D.C. Bennett died at his home here Friday morning at eight o'clock, after a short illness. He was interred at the Bennett cemetery. A widow and six children survive him, who have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement."
