Absalom, a carpenter by trade, was working at the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond in 1861.

He enlisted in Company "C", 6th Battalion (the "Tredegar Battalion"), Richmond Local Defense Troops (RLDT) on 16 October 1863, where he served under Major William R. Tanner and Capt. James E. Neal. By September 1864, he had transferred to Company "F", 2nd Battalion, RLDT.

He and wife Susan F. Seal had at least four children: Walter, Henry, Edgar and Clarence.
