Mary Catherine Newell age 97 of Cairo, IL, died on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at DayStar Nursing Home in Cairo, IL. Mrs. Newell was born March 2, 1916 in Cairo, IL. The daughter of Edward Dyas and Wilhelminia Alice Wallbaum of Cairo, IL. On Jul. 24, 1943 at St. Mary's Church in Mounds City, IL she married Fred Newell of Mounds, IL, who preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1992. She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Julie Jones Newell and granddaughter Christie Ann Newell of Cairo, IL. Survivors include two sons, Ronald Newell of Cairo, IL and Stephen Newell and wife Linda of Terrell, TX. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Jeffrey Newell and Angela Newell of Terrell, TX and Jeffrey's wife Rachel and soon to arrive great-grandson. Mrs. Newell was a lifelong resident of Cairo, IL and a member of St. Patrick's Church of Cairo, IL. Visitation will be from 4:00PM to 6PM, Sun., Feb 23, 2014 with Rosary at 5:30PM at Crain Funeral Home in Cairo Funeral Services will be held at 10:00AM on Mon., Feb. 24, 2014 at St. Patrick's Church in Cairo, IL with Father Chris Mujule officiating. Interment will be at the Mound City National Cemetery. Memorial Contributions can be made to St. Patrick's Church in Cairo and will be accepted at the funeral home.
