William Jefferson Cawthon was born about 1832, probably in Alabama. He was a private in the 15th Confederate Calvary and while on leave at his home on Shoals River, Walton County, Florida, he was taken prisoner by Union troops under Brig. Gen. Alexander Asboth on 22 September 1864. Sent to Elmira Prison in New York, he came down with febris typhoid and died on 26 Feb. 1865. According to his Civil War service record, he was interred in grave no. 2279.
