Opal M. Heffernan, 96, of Abilene, went to join her husband {Alvin Heffernan, Sr.} on Friday, November 25, 2005, in Heaven.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with Rever- end Kevin Ueckert and Deacon Rob Roberson officiating. Interment will follow in Potosi Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a visitation 6 – 8 p.m. Monday at the downtown funeral home.

Opal was born May 3, 1909 to Dora Elizabeth {Ellis} and W. M. {Bill} Slaughter in Abilene, Texas. Her father, Bill Slaughter, auctioned off the first lot in Abilene in 1881. Opal married Alvin Heffernan, Sr. on February 2, 1924 in Abilene. They were married for 61 years before he passed away. She lived all of her life in Abilene and was a member of South Side Baptist Church.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Oran Heffernan of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Alvin Heffernan, Jr. of Abilene; five daughters, Alberta Haile of Corpus Christi, Texas, Mary Lou Lewis of Ohio, Margie Willis, Iva Lois Oliver, and Linda Long, all of Abilene; twenty-five grandchildren; ninety-eight great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Nancy Daggubati, Dr. Luke Hinshaw, Home Health Care, and The Oaks at Radford Hills.
