Edward Davis Holder married Cynthia Ann Whitney in 1839. He owned the Hicks farm one mile South of Austin, Barren Co., KY, and was very wealthy, having a roll of money, $1,500.00 in his pocket at the time of his death by drowning in Barren river as he was riding across the flooded stream to see after his hogs.
He had two daughters. One named Maggie married W. R. Austin in 1860. This Russel Austin was with him at the time he drowned, and there has been some suspicion expressed that his drowning was not accidental as he was an excellent swimmer. His farm was sold by his Austin son-in-law to Captain W. T. Hicks. He was buried on the farm about the present site of the Jeff Hicks garden. Before his death, he built a school house on his farm on a green blue grass hill, for his daughter Maggie to teach in. From that location it received the name "Green Hill", and later was moved to the school site near Mt. Olivet Church. It is said that a Baptist church was organized in that school house, also called "Green Hill", and later was changed to Mt. Olivet after its removal to its present site. Still the hill connection is retained in the name Mt. Olivet.
$1,500 in 1867 equals over $31,000 in 2023 dollars
