Samuel Gideon Davis Woodruff, tenth child of Gideon McCager and Sarah Clementine (Sale) Woodruff, was born in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, 10 September 1877 and died in Gary, Indiana (Methodist Hospital) 25 April 1960. Samuel was living in the home of his only daughter, on a farm near Crown Point, Indiana at the time of his death. He was buried beside his wife, Nellie, at Terre Haute, Indiana, Roselawn Memorial Cemetery.

Samuel was married in Kentland, Indiana (Newton County, 25 December 1903 to Nellie Roselma Hatch (teacher), oldest child of Charles Ephraim and Flora Roselma (Kenoyer) Hatch.

While a young man, Samuel left his home in North Wilkesboro, North Caroline, following his uncles to Bluffton, Indiana, where they had gone to seek employment in the tin plate mills. He soon became a successful photographer and moved to Kentland, Indiana. He set up a studio and skillfully took his own wedding picture in 1903.

Samuel and Nellie moved from the farm to Earl Park, Indiana where they owned a grocery store and the telephone company. In 1928, the family moved to Terre Haute to be near the Indiana State Teachers College (Indiana State University). Five of the six children were graduated from that college and all six entered the teaching profession. Five remained in the profession until retirement ages of 62 to 65.

Samuel managed grocery stores for the H. N. Oakley chain for many years and then continued as an independent grocer after retirement, until he was 80 years of age.

After the loss of his wife, Samuel lived with his daughter LaVanche West, her husband Gale, and their son Gary.
