From the journal of Benjamin E. Hallett (his brother): "When he was six months old, upon the death of his mother, he went to live a part of the time in the family of Albert Edson in Barnstable, and later with his great aunt Azubah Ryder until her death.
After that occurred, he came to live in the old home with his grandmother and father where he spent most of his life until he was thirty eight. He attended and graduated from the Yarmouth Public Schools where he was regarded as a bright scholar. He was employed at various kinds of labor during the years spent in the old town, worked at Carriage painting with John Thatcher. Was at one time employed upon the John Simpkins estate, and in Alden Knowles' grocery store. He was prominent in Masonic Circles and a Master Mason. In 1918 he accepted employment in the grocery store of Wm Cowlishaw of New Britain, Conn. and at the time of this writing (1920) was unmarried and living in New Britain Conn. In 1921 he became manager of the Economy Grocery Co. of New Britain."
