Rev Wm L Austin, a brother of Drs C N and S H Austin, of our town, died at his home in Baltimore, on the 11th inst, of typhoid fever, aged 49 years. He studied theology at Auburn Seminary, where he graduated in 1877, and was soon after ordained.
The Baltimore Sun gives the following sketch of his ministerial life:
His first charge was at Naples, N Y. After remaining there three years he traveled through the West, doing missionary work. Later he accepted a charge at Dunkirk, N Y, which he afterwards resigned to become pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church of New Albany, Ind. Thence he came to Baltimore and supplied temporarily the pulpits of the First and Twelfth Presbyterian Churches. May 1st, 1889, Mr Austin founded, with fourteen members, the congregation of the Covenant at Radcliffe's Hall, Fulton avenue and Pratt street. The congregation rapidly increased and later moved into the old Y M C A Hall, Lombard and Stricker streets. The present church was completed January 1st, 1893. The congregation at present numbers 160 members.
