James Leroy "Jim" Ahrens was the only son and the fourth and last child born to Irvin Leroy "Bud" and Nina Faye (Brace) Ahrens. James was born on 29 January 1946 in Redwood Falls, Redwood County, Minnesota. Jim graduated from Redwood Falls High School in 1964. In 1965, he moved to the Tri-City area with an older sister, Jean (Ahrens) Baune, and her children and husband, Jerry Baune.

James Leroy married Sandra Lee Steele on 16 July 1966 and they adopted a son, Timothy James Ahrens. Timothy was born on 26 September 1969.

James Leroy and Sandra Lee (Steele) Ahrens divorced in 1972.

When Jim lived in Minnesota, he served in the active Army National Guard from 1963 to 1969. After he moved to Washington, he continued to serve inactively from 1969 to 1971.

Jim worked for Westinghouse Hanford for almost 30 years; then, he pursued his life-long dream of becoming a long-haul truck driver. He drove truck until 2006 when he retired. Jim enjoyed watching NASCAR, fishing, hunting, and golfing with friends and family.

Jim was survived by his son, Timothy "Tim" Ahrens of Kennewick, Washington; sister, Rita (Lewis) Arnold of Litchfield, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Jerry Baune, of Ontario, Oregon; nieces, Pam Matsubu of Fruitland, Indiana, and Linda Smith and Karen Baune, both from Ontario, Oregon; nephew Ken Baune of Bend, Oregon; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Jean Baune and Barbara Lemcke.

A memorial service was held for James Leroy Ahrens on Saturday, 03 January 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mueller Tri-Cities Funeral Home in Kennewick, Washington.
