Emma was the first daughter of Peter Heitman and Louise Sarman. She married Fred W. Cook in 1905 and moved to Genoa, where they operated the James Canyon Ranch.

After selling the ranch in 1940 the couple moved to Reno, where Fred died in 1956. Emma had been a resident of Galt, California for one year at the time of her death.

She was a member of Esther Chapter No. 3, Order of the Eastern Star of Carson City, and the Daughters of the Nile in Reno.

She was survived by three sons; Walter, Harlon and Emmett Cook, two daughters; Mrs. Rose Bassman and Mrs. Jean Allen, a sister; Ida Thies and a brother; William Heitman.
