He shares a tombstone with his niece Sarah Withrow Blake.
The marker also contains a cenotaph memorial to his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Withrow Wier.
Wier-Creekmore Genealogy by Sarah Wallace (1944), p.3, reprinting an 1866 family history by his nephew, Col. William Withrow Wier which quoted biographical sketches from the ledger of W.W.Wier's father, Rev. William Wier, relating John Wier's childhood fever but mentions nothing about his being a merchant: “JOHN WIER in early life suffered seriously with a protracted spell of fever. He never finally recovered, but became absent, thoughtful and indifferent. He lived with his [original says "our"] father and mother as long as they lived and is now with his sister, [Elizabeth] Blake in So. Ca. He [was] never married.”
GREENWOOD COUNTY SKETCHES (1970) by Margaret Watson, (revised edition, 1982, p.421) says: “John Wier, born 1798, did not marry, was a merchant at Greenwood.” This book was reprinted from newspaper articles compiled by the author’s father circa 1900.

The (Carrollton, Alabama) WEST ALABAMIAN newspaper, Jan. 31, 1900, page 1: In an article entitled “OLD FAMILIES OF PICKENS COUNTY, ALABAMA: No. 1---The WIER FAMILY” by Jane Wier Latham, states: “John (Wier), b. July 18, 1798; was a merchant in Greene Co., Ala. (sic); d. unmarried, and buried at Rock Church, S.C.”

The History of Pickens Co., Alabama (1964) by J.F. Clanahan, p. 363, says John Wier was buried at the Rocks Presbyterian Church.” (This reprints the 1900 article from the West Alabamian.)

Apparently John Wier never moved to Greene Co., Ala., though three of his brothers did, and he was buried at Magnolia Cemetery with children of his sister Elizabeth Blake, not at the Rock Presbyterian Church where Elizabeth Wier Blake and her husband are buried along with their four parents.

The will of Thomas Wier Jr. in 1850 says "It is my Will that my son John at the final division of my Estate git fore hundred dollars More than either of the other children; and if he choose to remain with his mother on the farm during her life, he Shall be at liberty to do so with out expense."
