Dempsey L. Eddins ("Demp")
1927 ~ 2014
Dempsey L. Eddins ("Demp"), age 86 years, died at Saint Luke's Hospital in downtown Boise on February 6, 2014. Dempsey was born in LaBell, Idaho to George William and Sarah Meiklejohn Eddins on the evening of the Jack Dempsey v. Gene Tunney prize fight, September 22, 1927.
In November of 1956 Dempsey met Julie Leavitt in McCall, Idaho, and they were joined in marriage on September 26, 1958. Six months ago they celebrated 55 years as husband and wife.
Dempsey was the seventh of eleven children with nine brothers and one baby sister; George, Lonn, Ned, Elmer, Noel, Etta, Zane, Duane, Sam and Lewis. The Eddins family moved to Caldwell when Dempsey was a teenager. At fifteen years old, he was employed by Crookham Company where corn seed was processed. He moved on to Jordan Valley, Nevada to work with and ride horses on the range. During 1951 Dempsey relocated to McCall and was employed by Brown Tie and Lumber Company as a heavy equipment operator.
Called to service in the US Army, Dempsey was stationed in Germany with the 6th Infantry Division from 1954 to 1956. Returning to McCall to work in the woods as a logger, he fell trees for 27 years. During off seasons he was a Salmon River guide running jet boats for the Shepp and James Ranches. He became a heavy equipment operator in the gold mines of Nevada, Montana and Idaho, spending four years in Stibnite with Blattner Constructors of Minnesota before retirement.
Dempsey served as a devoted member of the McCall Volunteer Fire Department, nicknamed "Bear" by fellow firemen. He left the department as a Battalion Chief after 20 plus years of service to his community beginning in 1971. He had been a member of the Lions and Elk Clubs, and for many years he has been a member of the NRA.
A man who enjoyed all of nature and the outdoors, Dempsey was an avid hunter, with bow or gun, of birds, deer, elk and the ever elusive, moose. Fishing for salmon was his passion. A patch of fresh mushrooms or berries was not to be ignored. However, he has been known to drop his fishing pole for a game of poker with friends. Dempsey also enjoyed music, especially the older country western tunes. A yearly crop of vegetables, including ripe tomatoes and gardens of flowers, provided summer seasons filled with activity and pride of accomplishment.
Dempsey is survived by his wife Julie, son David Leavitt, brother Lewis and his wife Norma of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, sisters-in-law LaVern Eddins of Rigby, Idaho and Pat Eddins of Monteview, Idaho. Many nieces and nephews, extended family members, and friends.
As per Dempsey's wish, cremation services are pending under the direction of Heikkila Funeral Chapel, McCall, Idaho.
To honor one of the best of men, a memorial will be held in McCall, March 8, 2014 at 11:30 am at Heikkila Funeral Chapel. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather at the Senior Center for dinner and the opportunity to visit.
Private interment will take place in the McCall Cemetery sometime in the spring season.
