Daniel Boutillier was the son of English immigrant John L. Boutillier (born circa 1847) and Ohio native Martha Alice "Mattie" Long (born circa 1852.) He enlisted as a private in the U.S. military on April 29, 1898, and was honorably discharged on September 25, 1899.

Daniel married Grace Ethel Cluphf on July 1, 1907, in Spokane City; it was the first marriage for both. Grace was born in 1888 to New York native George F. Cluphf and Alpha Riburn (or Ryburn) of Illinois. She died in Kellogg, Shoshone, Idaho, in 1960.
