Traveling from Wales, Thomas Lloyd, a farmer, was 26-years-old when the Edmond Ellsworth Hand Cart Company began its journey from the outfitting post at Iowa City, Iowa on June 9, 1956. This first hardcart company had about 200 individuals, 56 handcarts, and 3 wagons. Under the leadership of Captain Edmund Lovell Ellsworth, the company arrived in the Salt Lake valley on September 26, 1856.

On November 7, 1860 in Spanish Fork, Utah Thomas marries Cecelia Thomas (1843-1925), the daughter of Evan Thomas (1801-1863) and Sarah Jones (1815-1845). Together, Thomas and Cecelia have twelve children.
