Mary Dorr, daughter of Carl and Lydia (Tchmerschnook) Dorr was born September 5, 1915 at the family farm southwest of Gackle, ND. She grew up, attended country school and later went to work for various families. Mary met her future husband, Lawrence Johnson of Kintyre, ND while they were working for the Patterson Land Company. Mary and Lawrence were married February 14, 1941 at the Dorr farm. Together they farmed, ranched and raised their family 8 miles northeast of Napoleon in Glendale Township.
After the death of her husband in 1976, Mary remained on the farm until 1994 when she moved into Napoleon, ND. In 2006 the Napoleon Care Center became her home. Those who knew Mary will remember her for determination in the face of adversity. When faced with the challenge of relearning to walk with prosthesis at the age of 91, Mary followed through with her therapy to accomplish that goal. She enjoyed knitting hanger guards and spent many hours doing so. Mary enjoyed even more the opportunities to share those items with family and friends. A very giving person, Mary instilled in her children the values of fairness, compassion, education and community service. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her children and their families.
Mary died Friday, October 29, 2010 at the Napoleon Care Center, Napoleon, ND. She was 95 years old.
