Daniel was the son of John Snider and Catherine Smathers of North Carolina.

On 4 May 1861 he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as a private in Company L, 16 NC Reg. With his regiment he saw bloody battles such as Frazier's Farm in in which he almost lost his life. On June 29, 1862 looking at his enemy less than 30 yards away as each of them were both reloading their guns. The Yankee loaded and fired first and the shot hit Dan on the right side just opposite the heart. After lying in the field for three days and nights he was discovered by Matthew [Matt] Love who gave him water and saved his life. The youngest son of Daniel and Rachel was named for this man who saved Dan's life. The Confederates advanced and succeeded in driving back the Yanks. In October of 1862 Daniel joined the 69 Regiment "Thomas Legion" and fought in various battles in Tennessee and Virginia.

On 9/2/1862 married Racheal Elizabeth Brendle in Haywood County, North Carolina. Daniel and Rachel are the parents of Harriet Florence, Martha Ellen, Julius Pender, Aaron Brown, Lillie Etta, Matthew Daniel, Laura McElroy and Nora Alzada.

In 1908 (at the age of 66) Daniel moved from Jackson County, North Carolina to Lyman, Skagit County, Washington with his wife, 3 daughters, 1 son, 1 daughter-in-law, 2 grandsons and three granddaughters.
