George C. Cooper Sr., 79, of 88 Gaston Street, Weston, passed away at 2:45 a.m. on Wednesday, January 30, 2008, in United Hospital Center of Clarksburg, following an extended illness. He was born in Roanoke on February 15, 1928; son of the late Oliver Cooper and Hettie (Linger) Cooper. Mr. Cooper first married Willa Lea (Exline) Cooper, who preceded him in death on February 16, 1961. On October 17, 1964, he then married Diane (Poe) Cooper, who survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Vicki Cooper and Rebecca Cooper of Weston, Beth Shinn of Lander, WY, and Dorine Claypoole of Grafton; and one son, Thomas Cooper of Weston. George is also survived by ten grandchildren, Jay Cooper, Nikki Cobb, Garry Claypoole, Leslie Claypoole, Stacey Holder, Adam Holder, Stephanie Holder, Echo Cooper, Connor Shinn and Zach Cooper; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Tap Cooper of Weston and Doug Cooper of Jane Lew; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by one son, George C. Cooper Jr.; one daughter, Marcia D. Holder; four brothers, D.T., Rodney, Robert and Donald Cooper; and one sister, Eloise Deckard. Mr. Cooper was a retired aide at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center of Clarksburg with 33 years of service. He attended the Grace Baptist Church of Weston. George was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served as a staff sergeant during the Korean Conflict. At the request of Mr. Cooper, he will have no visitation. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in the Mitchell Cemetery of Roanoke.
