At age fifteen, in 1927, Anita met Dick at Zion Church.
Dick was in the seminary quartet and provided the entertainment at the church bazaar. Anita’s mother, Alvina, told her that dinner would be at church, so she better go. Dick and Anita courted for four years before they married.

Rev. Elmer Dickbernd served many United Church of Christ churches, and Eden United Church of Christ in Affton, Missouri, was the longest. Anita often served as the organist.

When Dick retired in 1978, they moved to Friendship Village Retirement Center and lived there until Dick’s death in 2000 and Anita’s death in 2002. They lived a very frugal life, but in their death, they left large contributions to United Church of Christ missions. They did not have any children.
