She was born August 21, 1920 near Ewing, MO a daughter of Tarpley D. and Laura Bortner Clow. She married James Palmer Compton on January 4, 1940 in Hannibal, MO. He died June 2, 1970.
Violet is a member of the Assembly of God Church. She was a 1937 graduate of Durham High School and graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (Truman State University) in Kirksville in 1964 with a degree in English. She taught for seven years in various schools in Northeast Missouri and then took a job with the Missouri Division of Family Services and retired there in 1987.
Survivors include five children, Lola Woutzke and her husband Bill of Wymore, N.E., James A. Compton and his wife Jeanette of Ewing, MO, Vesta Major of Albuquerque, N.M, Rev. Ancel E. Compton and his wife Karen of Sedalia, MO and Brenda Sturm of Sedalia, MO; 20 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter Elva Kay Swarts, one son Thomas T. Compton, three son-in-laws, one great grandson, one sister Leila Alderton and one brother Woodrow Clow.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ball-Davis Funeral Home in Ewing with James A. Compton and Rev. Elmer Hagood officiating. Burial will be in Durham Cemetery, Durham, Missouri. Visitation will be held Friday, January 22, 2010 from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Ball-Davis Funeral Home in Ewing, MO.
The family suggest memorials be made to Latin American Child Care in care of Ball-Davis Funeral Home, Ewing, MO.
