Henry J. Fossell was working at the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railyard, in Quincy Illinois, when he fell over the side of a train car. The collision of one line of cars with the line of cars he was standing on, had caused him to fall. By the time he was rescued, 12 cars had passed over him. He was alive when pulled from beneath the train. However, the shock of the accident resulted in his death, at 1 a. m. Friday June 26, 1914, at St. Mary's hospital in Quincy Illinois. Henry J. Fossell had worked at the railyard about three years. He belonged to the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.

Henry J. Fossell was only 25 years of age. He had a wife, and a small daughter. His wife was expecting their second child. Their daughter Henrietta was born after her father's death.
