He was named after John Finley Crowe (1787–1860), a Presbyterian minister and the founder of Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana. "Finley" Crowe's wife, Esther née Alexander's family had at least one member which married into the Garrison Family.

Samuel Finley Crowe Garrison was a Sergeant in Company F and later was promoted to Chaplain, 40th Iowa Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He was educated at Illinois College, Jacksonville, OH, ordained Methodist Minister 1857, Iowa conference. He helped organize the 40th Indiana Infantry. He resided near El Dorado, Kansas, until late in life and moved to Little Robe, OK where he died May 30, 1906.

In 1870 he settled near El Dorado, Kansas, where he founded the Methodist Episcopal church. He shortly thereafter joined the Presbyterian Church in El Dorado. His contribution as founder has been written out of the history of the now United Methodist Church of El Dorado, Kansas. This is more a result of confusion than intention. Rev. L. S. Friend has been given this distinction. Friend did found another Methodist congregation in El Dorado in 1869. This congregation later merged with the Methodist Episcopal congregation founded by Rev. F. S. C. Garrison.
