Doris Louise Pierce, 84, of Damariscotta, passed away peacefully on Feb. 1 at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough, from complications of a stroke. She was born in Melrose, Mass. on Feb. 23, 1929, the daughter of Thomas B. and Ruth E. Leighton of Alna.

Doris moved from Massachusetts with her family in 1932, during the depression, to live and grow up on her father's family farm in Alna. She attended the Alna one-room schoolhouse, and graduated from Lincoln Academy in the class of 1946. Doris earned her Nursing degree from Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton Lower Falls, Mass. in 1950, working at Miles Memorial Hospital full-time until her marriage.

On Sept. 16, 1951, she married L. Denham Pierce in Sheepscot. Together they raised six children, all of whom remain members of the local community. She supported her husband in the family business, The Yellowfront Grocery, grinding hamburger, bringing in a wayward grocery cart, packing groceries, or any job she saw that needed doing.

Doris was active in the PTA, Miles Memorial Hospital League, Lincoln Academy Alumni Association, the Lincoln County Historical Society as a docent at the Chapman Hall House, was a volunteer for the Skidompha Library Used Book Shop, and was volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels. As one of the original nurses for the Lincoln County Ambulance Service, she earned her EMT and worked for that service for over 20 years.

Doris was known for her genuine kindness, generosity, and beautiful smile that she shared with everyone she met. Always there for anyone who needed a helping hand, she rarely refused when asked to donate her time for a purpose she believed in, or to help a friend or family member in anyway that she could. She shared her love of the natural world, her passion for family history, and her love of life with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, L. Denham Pierce; brother, Phillip Leighton; and granddaughter, Catherine R. Pierce.

She leaves her children, Linda Pierce-Morin, Jane and Jeffrey Tims, David and partner Jane Vickers, Steven and wife Patricia, Jeffrey and wife Denise, and Donald and wife Melissa; grandchildren, Leigh Benner and husband Matthew, Carolyn Watson and husband Jarred, Paige Dobson and husband Chris, Rebecca Emmons and husband Lee, Margaret Foster and husband Michael, Jenna, Samantha and Alexandria Pierce, Richard, Alison and Mitchell Pierce, and Danielle Pierce; step-grandchildren, Corey Wade, Sasha and Brie Konitzky; great-grandchildren, Andrea and Mason Benner, and Megan and Ryan Foster; and brother, Thomas Edward Leighton and wife Cathy.

A time to visit with the family will be held from 4-6 p.m., Fri., Feb. 7 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sat., Feb. 8 at the Damariscotta Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Newell officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Hillside Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Lincoln County Historical Society, c/o Bill Brewer, P.O. Box 61, Wiscasset, ME 04578; or Skidompha Public Library, P.O. Box 70, Damariscotta, ME 04543.
