Jeanne Russell Velvin, 77, of Greensboro, N.C., passed away early Monday morning, Nov. 21, 2005, at her residence, surrounded by loved ones.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005, at 10 a.m. at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church in Greensboro, N.C., with the Rev. Wendy Billingslea officiating. A graveside committal service will be held Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at 10:45 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
Born Nov. 5, 1928, to the late Eugene and Elizabeth Russell in Decatur, Ala., Mrs. Velvin was a longtime member of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church in Greensboro and Saint Christopher's Episcopal Church, in Bandera, Texas. She married James Carroll Jr., Feb. 14, 1947. She and her husband loved Bandera and the whole Texas way of life. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989. She was a lifetime member of the Optimist Club and a devoted member of the DAR, Arthur Forbis Chapter of Greensboro. While living in Texas she was employed by the Flying L Guest Ranch for many years. She was a special wife, mother and grandmother who was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her. She was blessed in the joy of sharing the last year and a half of her life with all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Living with Russell and Jesse brought her so much love and laughter on a daily basis and brought renewed light to her life.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Minette Russell Strader and her husband, Mickey, of Greensboro, N.C., and Eugenia "Genie" Elizabeth Haley and her husband, John, of Raleigh, N.C.; son, J.C. Velvin, III of Greensboro, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Michael, Jamie, J.C. Velvin IV, Russell, Drew, John and Jesse; and her two great-granddaughters, Tiernan and Ashlyn.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Vanstory St. Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice or to Oakhurst Rest Home c/o The Resident Fund, 3004 Dexter Ave., Greensboro, NC 27407.
